Find Your Inner Pageant Queen To Excel In Your Career - Forbes

Reality TV and the media have sometimes given pageants a bad reputation, but while my husband and I attended the Miss USA Pageant last night I found myself thinking about how relevant pageants still are for today’s woman.

Think pageants are only about strutting your stuff on stage in front of judges? Think again! The techniques women learn to compete in pageants are the same ones they can use to climb the proverbial career ladder. Check out these 5 pageant tips that can be directly applied to excel in the workplace:

Tip #1 - To ace the interview: Be extremely knowledgeable

2012 Miss USA Preliminary Competition Introduction, courtesy of MUO

Pageant queens don’t ace the interview competition just because of their looks; they do well in interviews because of their brains and personality.

“When you compete in a pageant, from local to international levels, you quickly realize that answering a variety of questions flawlessly is a huge element in the competition. You never know what questions you’ll be asked so you have to prepare for anything. Essentially, your answer needs to be as beautiful as you are on stage,” commented Christina Clarke, Miss Washington USA 2012. “And while beauty might get you noticed, it’s brains that are the most important aspect when it comes to competing in a pageant as well as competing for a job in business.”

Your goal…learn everything you can about the company, industry, key competitors, and needs of the customers. Then put your knowledge to work during interviews for your dream job by dazzling them with your wisdom and ideas.

I love this fantastic article from Forbes - so wonderful to get a positive viewpoint about pageants out in such a mainstream publication.  It’s about time people realise pageantry is about more than just looking pretty.

Time capsule - Erika Powell as Miss SC & Miss SC USA
Love these photos of Erika Grace Powell, who won the Miss South Carolina 2005 & Miss South Carolina USA 2012 titles and is one of only a handful of women who have placed at both Miss USA & Miss America - both times on stage at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas. Erika is a classical vocalist and from all accounts she would have placed higher at Miss America had the top 10 performed talent that year! She might not have won the ultimate titles but her future is extremely bright.

And in reverse… Miss America 2012 state titleholders who have competed in MUO!

As well as Allyn Rose, a number of the recent Miss America state titleholders have competed in past Miss USA or Miss Teen USA state pageants, mainly in the Teen division in 2008:

  • Megan Ervin (Miss Illinois) - 3RU at Miss Illinois USA 2010, 2RU in 2009.
  • Taylor Kinzler (Miss Massachusetts) - 3RU at Miss Massachusetts Teen USA 2008
  • Leighton Jordan (Miss Georgia) - Top 15 at Miss Georgia Teen USA 2008
  • Sloane Lewis (Miss Kansas) - Top 15 at Miss Kansas Teen USA 2008
  • Jordyn Colao (Miss Pennsylvania) - Top 15 at Miss Pennsylania Teen USA 2008
  • Chandler Lawson (Miss Tennessee) - Top 15 at Miss Tennessee Teen USA 2007
  • Kaitlin Gates (Miss West Virginia) - Top 12 at Miss West Virginia Teen USA 2010, 4RU 2010, T12 2009, 2RU 2008.

I don’t have photos of all, but here are a few: (1) Megan Ervin, 2nd from left, (2) Taylor Kinzler, 2nd from right, (3) Kaitlin Gates, back left.

Former Miss USA & Miss Teen USA contestants doing well in Miss America state pageants this year!

I need to update this image… missing are Allyn Rose, Mandy Schendel, Samantha Sojka and a few others… but just wanted to post a bit of a rundown of how former MUO girls are doing at Miss America this year.  There have been a number of top five placements, but also some shockers missing from the semis!

  • Allyn Rose (Miss Maryland USA 2011) - Miss District of Columbia 2012.  From memory Allyn is the first Miss USA contestant to compete at Miss America (in that order) since Cari Leyva in 2007.  Allyn, a successful ice skater, performed an artistic roller skating routine for her talent!
  • Serena Karnagy(Miss Hawaii Teen USA 2007) - 2nd runner-up at Miss Hawaii.  Should come back for Miss Hawaii USA!
  • Mackenzie Green (Miss District of Columbia USA 2010) - 3rd runner-up at Miss DC 2012.  Mackenzie played the bassoon for MAO… love seeing unique talents!
  • Samantha Sojka (Miss Connecticut Teen USA 2011) - 4th runner-up at Miss Connecticut.  Did really well in her first year at Miss CT and I hope she competes at Miss Connecticut USA.  She’s young but won’t be much younger than Olivia when she won Miss RI USA!
  • Amanda Debus (Miss Delaware Teen USA 2011) - Top 10 at Miss Delaware.  Amanda also won a preliminary gown award.  Amanda is a former Miss Delaware’s Outstanding Teen and has a good chance of becoming a triple or even quadruple crown winner in coming years.
  • Breanne Ponder (Miss Mississippi USA 2010) - Top 10 at Miss Mississippi.  Breanne was a preliminary swimsuit winner but appears to have fallen short in the talent competitino.
  • Susie Evans (Miss Virginia Teen USA 2011) and Jeni Dixon (Miss Missouri Teen USA 2008) - both unplaced at Miss Missouri.  This was Jeni’s third try at Miss Missouri and I’m surprised she didn’t place.  Susie is one of a number of former titleholders attending Lindenwood on the MUO scholarship.  I’d love to see both at Miss Missouri USA this fall.
  • Elizabeth Hawthorne (Miss Michigan Teen USA 2008) - Unplaced at Miss Michigan.  Elizabeth was 3RU at Miss Michigan last year, not sure what happened!
  • Maggie Lawson (Miss Virginia Teen USA 2009) - Unplaced at Miss Virginia.  I and a number of others were rather surprised about this!  Maggie had previously been top 10 at Miss Virginia & Miss Tennessee.  Another who I think would be fabulous at Miss USA.
  • Brittany Dube (Miss New Hampshire Teen USA 2005) - Unplaced at Miss New Hampshire.  Brittany has competed at Miss NH for a number of years without placing, although she was 3RU in 2008.
  • Lauren Carter (Miss Vermont USA 2011) - Unplaced at Miss New Hampshire.  This was one of the biggest shocks considering she had won Prelim Swimsuit and was considered a front runner to win.  Lauren had one of the best bodies at Miss USA 2011 and I thought she might break VT’s curse.
  • Alexis Duprey (Miss New Mexico Teen USA 2009) - ??? at Miss New Mexico.  I’ll update when I know her placement.

Still to compete are Mandy Schendel (Miss Washington Teen USA 2008) and Jefra Bland (Miss Kentucky Teen USA 2009) in their home states.  Jefra has made the top five a number of times and is considered a good chance at the title.
